The Hourglass by Marc Newson
“This Hourglass is all about time but in a more esoteric and fundamental way. I was thinking of having fun with time.” Marc Newson
The Hourglass is a true engineering feat. Blown from a single piece of borosilicate glass, it contains millions of tiny spheres made of stainless steel. Each and every one is precisely 0.6"mm in diameter and coated with fine gold or silver. When the Hourglass is inverted, the precision balls fall and bounce in an erratic but truly mesmeric way. As a handmade piece, accuracy can vary by ± 2 minutes. Marc Newson’s signature is etched onto every Hourglass as they leave our workshop in Basel, Switzerland.
